Create a .tar.gz file

     for a file
     tar -czvf name_of_your_archive.tar.gz /path/to.file

     or for a directory
     tar -pczvf name_of_your_archive.tar.gz /path/to/directory


Unpack a .tar.gz file

     tar -xzvf name_of_archive.tar.gz
